How to adjust to the feel of a new mattress

It is not uncommon for people to be resistant to change. When people are used to their old mattress and then they are given a new one, they may resist the change because their body has become accustomed to a few of the materials used in the old mattress.

A new mattress will be different than the type of mattress that a person is used to. This new mattress can take some time to adjust to.

    Adjusting to a latex mattress

The first thing a person might notice about a latex mattress is that it is different from what they are used to. It feels firmer and more supportive than a traditional mattress. But it is not just firmer, it also has a different feel to it. It is not as bouncy as a spring mattress, and it does not sink down as much as memory foam or polyurethane foam.

But the good news is that the latex is going to get softer over time. The latex will continue to break in and the person will start to get used to it.

    1. Keep Sleeping on It

Just because the mattress isn’t perfect or comfortable doesn’t mean that you should stop sleeping on it after a few nights. In some cases, people will start out finding the mattress too firm and/or uncomfortable. Then after a few months, they say it’s the most comfortable mattress they’ve ever slept on. And that's why it's important for people to give a new latex mattress a chance.

For a new latex mattress, try taking a nap on it. This extra 10 to 15 minutes spent napping on your new mattress gives your body an opportunity to adjust to the comfort and feel of your new mattress.

During the day, try lying in bed when you are reading or watching tv to help break in the mattress and get accustomed to the new feel.

    2. Give it Time.

What it takes to adjust to a latex mattress is time. Any new mattress may feel strange the first time you lay on it. This doesn't mean you made a mistake buying the mattress — in most cases, you just need time to adjust to it.  It won't happen overnight. It will take at least a few weeks to a couple months before any mattress starts to feel natural and comfortable. You just need time to adjust to it and the mattress also needs time to adjust to you, and it's perfectly okay if it doesn't feel right the first few days.

The more time a person spends on a new latex mattress, the more they will get used to it.
