Where can I buy a latex mattress?

You most likely won’t find a natural latex mattress, like Spindle, at your local mattress store. There are a number of reasons for this.

    Chain stores dominate the marketplace.

As in many categories — hardware, electronics, clothing, sporting goods, appliances, groceries, etc. — big box stores have taken the lion’s share of the business, and there are very few independents left. These retailers are built on a formula model with slight variation across their locations. Go into a Mattress Firm, or your chain of choice, anywhere and you are likely to find the same sea of mattresses from store to store.

Simmons, Sealy, Serta, dictate the terms.

The mattress stores, even Mom & Pop locals, get the vast majority of their product from the large manufacturers, or from smaller licensed brands like King Koil, Spring Air, need more.  The names of each model of mattress will be different from store to store, that is so the retailer can say they have something unique. But the BelAire Luxury Plush Supportive Supreme you see at Macy’s will be the exact same mattress as the Monteverde Supreme Support Luxury Plush available at Jordans. They will just have different ticking.

Latex is the mattress makers mattress.

Most people still buy mattresses at a typical brick & mortar retailer. They have not done a lot of research or maybe cowed by buying a mattress online. When they walk into a store, they expect to see traditional mattresses, and those are the easiest for the salespeople to sell. While not always tucked away in the back of the store, latex mattresses — at the rare retailer who has them — are not up front with all the top-sellers. Why?

    • They are difficult to explain to the typical mattress shopper.
    • When people hear “latex,” they think of latex allergies [not an issue with latex mattresses].
    • They are relatively expensive, and
    • Are a pain for the delivery guys to deal with. It is really easy for the delivery guys to deliver an off-the-rack innerspring or foam mattress. A latex mattress is just too floppy, and difficult to move, so it gets assembled it in your home.

The customers choose the familiar nationally advertised or just as good off-brand mattress, and the sales folks go home and sleep on their latex, the mattress makers mattress.

Can I buy a Spindle mattress in a store?

The Spindle 10” Organic Latex Mattress is only available from our website or by giving us a call. We are a small family-run firm with a mission to sell remarkable mattresses at kick-ass prices while providing you with unparalleled customer service. You get a 100% Money Back Comfort Guarantee that gives you a full year to determine if the mattress is right.

Shopping for a mattress, even in a brick + mortar environment, is not as simple as it used to be. And there are still plenty of folks who are new to the online mattress market. We have gotten calls from folks who want to smell the mattress. To lie on the mattress. To actually see and touch the mattress to be sure we’re real and exist. How can you know if a Spindle meets your needs if you cannot lie on it? We understand that is a conundrum for some folks, but it does not have to be a deal breaker. You may be able to find a Spindle proxy nearby. In fact, we encourage you to comparison shop to really understand the excellent value you get from Spindle.

The Mattress Underground is also a great resource for finding natural and latex mattresses in cities across the country. A wonderful time to go mattress shopping is after lunch when you have some food in your system which may even relax you or tire you out a bit. Also give yourself plenty of time on a mattress...aim for 20 minutes to get a feel for the materials and firmness/cushion combo, and maybe bring your own pillow.

At the end of the day, a mattress like ours is pretty simple: latex, cotton, and wool; no flame retardants; inherently easy to modify. Through your research, you will learn terms such as Talalay, Organic, Dunlop, Continuous Pour, "Botanical", Blended, Natural, ILD, and more. Some of these make a difference, others are just marketing terms like calling seltzer, sparkling water, or pretending bamboo is different than rayon. There will be nuances between mattress models, but the similarities will considerably outweigh the differences.

After you have shopped around, if you see a mattress, you like give us a call with as much info as you can, e.g.: manufacturer, model name, composition, firmness, etc. We will not be able to make an exact match to every product out there and we are generally able to get pretty close.
